Jeremy Roberts
I have lived in Kingsland since 1994 and have always enjoyed the offbeat character. The once gum-stained, grotty, 1980`s nowheresville pavement is now popular, with its blend of coffee, students, Goths, monied mums, speed-freaks, and all round regular folk.
The streets are definitely alive here, and there is always some kind of inspiration to be found from the landscape and faces - whether its the sound of death-metal through egg carton sound-proofed walls, skateboard wheels scorching the asphalt, confrontational street art slapped up under the cover of darkness, or the drunken screaming of a Xmas work-do that's gotten way out of hand.
Yeah, I live on New North Road. It`s our little bit of East Village...hee he
Check out my upcoming exhibition at Depot Artspace in Devonport from February 9th - 21st.

| NBR NZ Opera - Summer Opera at Ayrlies |
Whitford | February 24th
Ayrlies Gardens in Whitford are widely regarded as New Zealand’s greatest gardens, a magnet for overseas visitors as well as New Zealanders. Lovingly tended by Beverley McConnell and her gardeners for over 30 years, Ayrlies is situated in gently rolling country east of Auckland and features 12 acres of sweeping lawns, detailed plantings, ponds and waterways.
On Sunday 24 February, these famous gardens, which are open by appointment only, are the venue for The NBR New Zealand Opera’s fundraiser, ‘Summer Opera at Ayrlies’, an open-air concert of popular opera. Mrs McConnell says it’s a joy to host the event in her gardens. “I’m a huge supporter of NZ Opera and its activities. And there’s a natural symbiosis between beautiful singing and the magical surroundings of a country garden.”
MC Maggie Barry will take the audience through a series of arias and ensembles from favourite operas including La Bohème, Rigoletto and Carmen.
The artists include the much loved and acclaimed mezzo soprano Helen Medlyn, and talented singers from The NBR New Zealand Opera’s Intern programme – both Resident Artists and PwC Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists will be showcased. Claire Caldwell accompanies the singers.
Kim Fisher, President of Friends of the Opera, who manage the fundraiser, says this is a very special event on the Opera calendar. “The ambience is what makes it stand out. What could be more appealing than sitting back and enjoying an afternoon of fine singing amid the most magnificent of gardens? Come early and explore the gardens before sitting down to enjoy a picnic on the lawn (your own or a ‘Friends’ hamper) and listening to the concert,” he says.
Summer Opera at Ayrlies
Ayrlies Gardens, 125 Potts Rd, Whitford
Gates open 11.00am; Concert commences 2.00pm. Gardens open following concert until 6.00pm.
