In a December census the population of Welligton was recorded as 12,566

1863
Original Queen's Wharf was built.

1865
Wellington finally became the capital city of New Zealand. When the Government moved to Wellington an Italianate mansion with a tower was built for the Governor. The Beehive now occuppies the site.

1865
Colonial Museum was opened in a small building behind parliment.

1865
The General Assembly sat in Wellinton for the time.
